Mission Statement

To promote the popularity of the game of chess in an informal environment where club members can observe, participate and learn, and also provide students a chance to compete in intercollegiate chess competition.

  • 08/25/07 - The Penn State Chess Team congratulates Stephen Hlywak on becoming the new Club President and Team Captain.

  • 04/26/2007 - We will be nominating new officers at tonight's meeting. Please try to attend.

  • 04/19/2007 - All of Penn State sends out their thoughts and prayers to all residents of Virginia Tech. Penn State will be holding a memorial service on Thursday, April 19th to pay tribute to the victims of the shooting.  There are also going to be many fundraisers and events to help support Virginia Tech this weekend 'Blue/White' weekend, during the Blue/White game.  The Chess Club is planning to host a tournament in the near future to help support VT. More details in the coming week.

  • 04/19/2007 - Please attend the club meeting on Thursday if you are interested in running for an office position for the upcoming 2007-2008 academic year.  Elections will take place next Thursday, April 26th.

  • 02/19/2007 - Penn State Chess Team finished with a score of 3.5/6 at the United States Amateur Team East tournament (USATE) and finished as the 6th College/University.

  • 02/16/2007 - Linares/Morelia Super GM Tournament has started. Considered one of the top three chess tournaments of the year, Linares/Morelia pits 8 super-GMs against each other in Mexico for half the event, and then Spain for the other half.

  • 01/18/2007 - First Chess Club meeting of the Spring Semester and the new year! Come on down to the meeting for some chess and also we will talk about the USATE tournament coming up.

  • 11/26/2006 - Penn State Chess Team takes first place at National Chess Congress! The team was led by Emily Chu and Aaron Nicely, who won their respective sections with 5 and 5.5/6 points. Stephen Hlywak finished in 2nd in his section with 5/6, while Michael Johnson finished with a very strong 4.5/6. We will have more results and photos coming soon.

  • 11/16/2006 - Last Chess Club meeting before the Team travels to Philadelphia for National Chess Congress. All team members who are traveling to NCC are required to attend this meeting to finalize travel, registration and lodging plans.

  • 11/2/2006 - We will discuss details on National Chess Congress. All members who have been contacted to participate should try to attend. There is now one spot available (due to a cancellation) to go to the competition. If you are interested, please email Derek Fisher at dmf248@psu.edu

  • 10/19/2006 - Unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts and hubapalooza, the Penn State Chess Club was not able to meet last week. We apologize to those who were unaware of this conflict.

  • 10/4/2006 - Vladimir Kramnik is the new Unified World Chess Champion!  Kramnik defeated Topalov 2.5-1.5 in tiebreaks, by defeating him in the last tiebreak game before blitz playoffs.  Kramnik's next match is November 25th, where he will take on Supercomputer Fritz in a Man vs. Machine match.

  • 9/25/2006 - The Unified World Championship Match between Veselin Topalov and Vladimir Kramnik is underway in Elista. Currently their is much controversy in the match as Topalov filed complaints and threatened to pull out of the event because of a 'toilet' dispute. Many GM's and players worldwide have pledged their support for Vladimir Kramnik, saying Topalov was out of line and acted in a classless manner with what proved to be baseless and completely false accusations.   • 9/21/2006 - Next chess club meeting. Tryouts for Chess Team will be discussed.

  • 9/14/2006 - 27 people attended our second meeting and we also had dominos pizza and soda!

  • 9/10/2006 - The new web page is slowly coming together and should be completed by the October.

  • 9/07/2006 - First meeting of the Fall semester was held at the hub lower level at the bottom of the stairs. We had a nice turnout and thank everyone for coming!
