Thursday, April 2, 2009 Email from Sarah Woodruff Hey girls! We are planning one last event with our THON child, Andrea. We are going to have a progressive dinner for her so that she has a chance to spend some time with us and see some of our apartments. For those of you who don't know what a progressive dinner is, it's when you have appetizers at one place, then move to dinner at another, and finally desserts at another. Because we will be having this downtown, right off of campus, it is very easy for you guys to attend! Even if you just want to stop by for one course-we would love to see you-Andrea is hoping to meet even more Oriana Singers! Plus you get alot of free food! The date for this is next friday, April 10th from 6-9 pm, and our schedule is: 103 Town Square (off of Atherton)-appetizers 6 pm 113 S. atherton apt 1 (next to atherton hotel, across from arbys)-around 7 pm 214 cedarbrook-around 8:15 If you can't make it for the entire time and would like to meet up, call me at ***-***-**** to see exactly where we are. Anyway I just wanted to say again that this sunday we will be having a VERY IMPORTANT meeting in Atherton Hall at 9 pm. In case you didn't read the attached letter from Steve Krugle that I sent on the last email, we will be having elections for officers for next year at this meeting. We would really love to have 2 Oriana Singers liasons, plus have other Oriana girls fill some of our positions-and so far we have only heard from one Oriana girl...so anyone still interested please email me back. Anyone interested in joining our THON group but not running for a position should come also!! If you want to be considered as an oriana/glee club dancer for next year you MUST come to this meeting on sunday (or email us saying that you can't make it), otherwise we completely understand that you don't want to be involved with THON or are involved in it with other orgs; therefore as far as we are concerned anyone, as long as they put time/effort into our org and care about Andrea, has just as great a chance of representing our org by dancing as those that are actually singers in either group. This year we have dedicated people who have been greatly involved despite the fact that they don't attend either choir class, but they care about THON and we feel that's all we need to qualify them to take an equal part in our org. Congrats- this year we raised a record total of a little over 12,000 dollars for THON!! It's never too early to think about next year's THON!! I have attached a letter from Steve Krugle, Glee Club THON chair, with important information about next years THON group-we are trying to make it bigger and better so please please take the time to read it. The letter talks about elections for next years THON chairs, and we have added a few more positions including Glee Club and Oriana liasons to encourage more Glee Club and Oriana girls to come out! Here's a copy of a newspaper story that was run in Andrea's town talking about her experience with THON and the fact that we will be canning at her house this weekend if anyone is interested in reading it. It is a very good article. On that note, our last canning weekend will be at Andrea's house in Huntingdon-and I greatly encourage you all to consider coming even if you've never come before! This is an especially good trip to be a part of because her house is only about 45 min from State College, so you can even come just for the day saturday to can, or saturday night and hang out with Andrea and her family! This is a great great chance to meet the family before THON weekend and get excited about THON!! Let me know if you are planning on coming the entire weekend, or stopping by and would like directions. We also have a few new Glee Club boys planning to come at least for part of the weekend, so no worries about not knowing some of the group members or never having met Andrea before. Since we have now picked dancers for THON 2009-it's time for us to send them dancer mail! This can be turned in at 324, 327, or 331 HUB until feb. 13th. All you have to do is to make sure that the dancer's name and number are on the piece of mail. Karlie Leung 68b Stacey Triplett 68a If you are wondering what to write to them-it really doesn't matter what it is, just that they get lots of it! You can tell them how great it is that they're doing this, etc. or you can give them pictures, funny cartoons, motivating song lyrics, anything you can think of. For those of you that don't know much about THON, they will get this mail early saturday morning, after being awake and on their feet for over 30 hours, so they will need lots of support and encouragement. Even if you weren't here last year when Stacey was in the choir, just send her a nice note and she will appreciate it even if she doesn't personally know you. And of course we all know Karlie! The shirt is in electric blue with "THON 2009 Oriana Singers and Glee Club" and paw prints on the front and "Dream Forward, Andrea" and the Four Diamonds on the back. Last year a few of us ventured out to Huntington on Halloween to hang out with Oriana Singers/Glee Clubs THON child, Andrea. Andrea's mother made us dinner and we went trick-or-treating. We had so much fun last year and now Andrea's looking for people to come over this year to take her trick-or-treating again. If anyone is interested in heading out to get a great chance to meet and hang out with Andrea, have a lot of fun, and of course...get free candy, please let me know. I know Halloween is on a Friday this year but don't worry, there's normally a curfew on trick-or-treating so we won't be back to state college too too late. We really had a lot of fun last year and it meant the world to Andrea so I encourage everyone to really consider going. See you tomorrow! Next Monday, the 24th, we will be holding our final thon meeting of the year. If you are interested in being a part of Oriana/Glee Club thon next year, PLEASE be at this meeting! We will be holding elections for officers and chairs, for all of the following positions: President Vice President (help the president run things) Treasurer (keep track of funds, turn checks into the thon office throughout the year) Family Relations Chair (keep in touch with Andrea and family, send mail and packages, organize visits and stuff) Fundraising Chair (organize canning trips, letter campaigns, etc) Please EMAIL ME IN ADVANCE if you are interested in running for any of those positions. But the year is not over...we have one more meeting. At this last meeting, we will be holding elections for President (oversee five positions below, make sure everything runs smoothly) Vice President (assist president in overseeing everything, handle tshirt order) Treasurer (handle all donations, turn in canning money, turn in checks throughout the year) Family Relations Chair (keep in touch with Andrea and her family, send her mail and presents, organize get-togethers with them, attend four FR meetings throughout the year) Fundraising Chair (handle organizing canning trips, letter writing, any other fundraisers throughout the year) Please send me an email if you are interested in running for any of these positions. I will have a paper ballot ready for our final meeting, everyone present will have a vote, although if you absolutely can't make it, you can still run for something. You must, however, be present to vote. Regardless of whether or not you can be there, you MUST email me if you are interested in a position. Our final meeting will be Monday, March 17th (monday after break) at 9pm. I'll email closer to the time with a location. Send me an email if you CAN'T be there. Thursday, February 21, 2008 Email from Rebecca Rowland Hi all!!!!!! I hope you all are as completely stoked as I am. Forget classes, THON is all that is on my mind. I just wanted to clarify more information about the floor passes. The pass tables are located at portals 14 and 15 located between gates C and D. If you cannot find this, ask a rules and regs committee member and they'll be able to point you in the right direction. When you go to get on the floor, they take your student id. MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR STUDENT ID WITH YOU THIS WEEKEND! Without it, you will not be able to get onto the floor. Reminder you don't have to be on the floor the entire time that you have assigned, but that is when you do have the floor pass so you should try to utilize it as best as possible. I really hope you will all hang out in the stands as well. I know that personally, I am planning on being in the stands supporting Sarah and Elise ALL WEEKEND LONG. Please join me and just spend as much time at the BJC this weekend as possible. You'll all want to get to the stands for the last four hours which are supposed to be the most amazing thing ever. You'll have to get there plenty early for that so be warned it gets crowded. We'll try to have a spot all weekend in the stands where we'll stay consistently, but it really depends on how many people are hanging out there. If you need help finding us, my cell is **********. Before THON begins on Friday, team members, moralers, families, students and such all line up to create a tunnel from the IM building to the BJC for the dancers to run through as the last time they see the sunlight for the weekend. This is a really exciting energy filled tradition and I would love for a bunch of us to be there in the tunnel to support Sarah and Elise, our FABULOUS dancers. Please come on out to the tunnel and other pre-thon activities taking place in the BJC. We can meet up outside the IM building at 415, I think the tunnel starts setting up at 420 so you don't want to be late. It would be awesome if we could have a group of us there, maybe even make some posters or something to just get really into it. 3 days!!!!!!! There are about five or six people that are on the fence with this canning trip and I just really need to figure out numbers. That makes a difference in how many cars we need to take, which we're presently in almost a shortage of. If we need another car, I need time to take my car in to the shop and get a new dashboard. Get it? We really need to know numbers asap. Especially with how the weather's looking. I know it's a matter of homework for some of you. We all have homework and exams and shitloads of stuff to do. It's one weekend FOR THE KIDS. Bring your homework with you, work on it Sunday night, or decide you can't come. But whichever way, we need to have a number. It's that time again to get ready to head out onto our final canning trip for this THON season. We've been really successful so far this year and hope to continue the amazing work this weekend. What to bring: your penn state id, warm clothing and lots of it (forecast is calling for the twenties all weekend so it is extremely important that you bundle up hardcore), pillow and sleeping bag if you have one, money for food- for two lunches and a trip to walmart for munchies for the weekend, and a lot of excitement and penn state THON spirit! As of right now, we are expecting 17 people. A few of those are maybes however. PLEASE respond to this email ASAP so we can have a final count and make sure we have the correct amount of cars. So far we have Elise, Steve, Ryan, Nick and Hannah driving. We want to leave by 3pm at Atherton loop on Friday. If some people cannot leave that early, we can arrange for a car to leave at a later time, but please let me know that ASAP so that can be arranged. 10 days till THON, I hope everyone is as unbelievable excited as I am!!!! Exciting, exciting....! Our final meeting will be next Sunday, February 10, at 7pm in Atherton Hall (NOT redifer). This is an extremely important meeting to be at. We'll be announcing who's on the pass list, and setting up a schedule. If you want to get on the floor at Thon, you need to be at this meeting. Everyone is welcome at Thon and I hope you all come for as much of it as you can, but you have to be on the pass list to get on the floor and play with the kids. The list will have people who have gone canning and attended family relations events throughout the year and generally supported Oriana Thon! I think those are both great deals. Friday is the last day I will be accepting orders because I am going to send it into the printer so that we can hopefully have them in time for the last canning weekend. Cash payments must be made by the end of the day on Wednesday. You can give me the money in Oriana or find a time outside of class to meet up. Becca Thursday, January24, 2008 Email from Stacy Triplett Hello ladies!! I attached a document to the end of this e-mail about sending dancer/captain mall for THON. If you guys didn't know.. Elise and Sarah are our dancers this year and it would be great for EVERYONE to make each of them a card to open. They are going to be dancing all weekend ftk, so it's the least we can do to keep their spirits up. They've both worked sososososo hard to fundraise, visit Andrea and just generally support THON this year. Also, if you have other friends that are dancing or are captains, I know they would LOVE to get mail from you. It would really make someone's day just to get one more card. The last trip was a TON of fun, so we're really looking forward to doing it again, hopefully with a few more girls! It's amazingly nice to get off campus and 'out of the bubble' for a weekend, and it's a fabulous chance to bond with some oriana girls. AND we raised over $1500 the first weekend.....let's beat it this time! Also, Andrea is in the hospital for a few days due to some complications with her pancreatitis...cards would be much appreciated. No 'get well' cards please, don't remind her that she's sick. First of all, and most importantly, update on how our first canning weekend went....we raised over $1500!!! Way to go Canners! Second of all, I wanted to send a reminder about our upcoming letter addressing party! This Sunday, the 28th, at 7pm in Redifer we'll be meeting to address and get letters ready to mail. We'll order pizza and we will have envelopes and stuff there, so just bring your addresses! Please bring as many addresses with you as humanly possible, this could be a huge money raiser. It will also benefit you if you are hoping to dance. The more letters you send, the more checks you will receive, the better chance you have of dancing. I would also really really appreciate it if all the members of Oriana (not just thon girls) could send me at least one address that we could send a thon letter to. Some of you are involved in other thon groups, but those of you who aren't....you could even just give us your parents address! Every address helps! Thanks girls! See you this afternoon! ftk, Elise Monday, October 15th, 2007 Email from Thon Chair Elise Rodgers Hello Girls! Here are the details from last night's meeting... Wednesday, October 31st we are taking a trip to have dinner with the Johns family and then take Andrea trick-or-treating! We’ll be leaving around 4 and getting back around 9. Email me if you’re interested! We are getting started on this year’s letter fundraising campaign. I would really love it if every Oriana girl could send me at least one address that we can send a letter to, asking for thon donations. Even just giving me your parents address would be great! Those of you who have been attending meetings and are involved with Thon a bit more, we are having a letter party Sunday, October 28th at 7pm. We’ll order pizza or something and sit around and get our whole first round of letters ready to send! I’d like you girls to bring as many addresses as you can find to that meeting! This one also only applies to the actual Oriana Thon Girls: to be in the running to be a dancer this year, you must raise $1000 by January. Out of those who raise that amount, the top two fundraisers will be our dancers. Those after the first two will be the girls who get floor passes for the finale hours of Thon. (Everyone who wants to will get a chance to be on the floor at some point). Regarding the bullet point above, the more letters you send, the better chance you’ll have of dancing! I am looking for a treasurer for our lovely organization. It will involve handling a lot of little technical details (thon overall is fairly strict about how it handles money), but it would not be terribly difficult or time-consuming. Whoever would like to, please email me and I’ll send you the information you need and get you started! Each year, Thon offers trips to Hershey Medical Center to tour the pediatric oncological unit, meet some four diamonds families, and really see what we’re supporting. This meeting is an important one...so if you can make it that would be great! ftk, Elise Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 Email from Thon Chair Elise Rodgers Ok here's the deal: If we want to go canning, we need to apply for canning permits at least two weeks before the canning weekend (oct. 19-21). So. I need you to tell me if you're coming or not by Thursday. This Thursday. Additionally, WE NEED HOST FAMILIES. We need somewhere to stay that weekend, and I need to know where we're staying before we can apply for permits (because the permits are specific to the area or business where we're canning). so ASK YOUR PARENTS IF THEY WANT TO HOST! It's really easy, we basically just crash there because we're out canning all day. There are only 4 canning weekends before Thon. Just 4. Let's make this one work! Thanks girls! Don't forget. Tell me by Thursday. ftk, Elise Monday, October 1st, 2007 Email from Thon Chair Elise Rodgers Hello Girls! 3 Very Important Announcements regarding Thon: 1) Glee Club boys are not interested in Thon. They are, however, interested in girls. :) This Wednesday, we'd like all of you involved in Thon to wear something the glee club boys will like, and stay 15 minutes after Oriana to go stand in front of the Glee Club and look cute while I ask them to PLEASE GET INVOLVED! 2) CANNING!!! October 19-21 is our very first canning weekend of the year. It's going to be tons of fun, so get excited...anyone interested in going, please consider hosting and having a group of us to your house for the weekend so we can go stand on corners and beg for money for the kids! We need to know whether or not you are coming on our little weekend trip by October 10th (next Wednesday) so we have time to organize where we're going and how we're getting there. (our little trip to glee club this wednesday is super important...cause wouldn't it be fun to have boys on our canning trip?) So GET EXCITED! And let us know if you can go! 3) I don't have a specific date yet, but I'm planning another visit with Andrea sometime in October, hopefully on a Sunday afternoon.
